Boys hoops: Riverdale 79, Smyrna 48

Consistent bench production allowed the Warriors (1-1) to keep everyone on the floor fresh and employ an active defense that overwhelmed a depleted Smyrna group (0-1) playing without the core of its team, which is still wrapped up in a football season.

Riverdale won 79-48 tonight at Johnny Parsley Memorial Gymnasium.

T.J. Chesterfield led the way with 13 points, while Janeal McDonald added 10 for the Warriors, who shot 54 percent from the field and had 13 players score.

“We don’t have three or four superstars, but we’ve got eight or 10 kids we’re trying to get in the flow of the game and play, and we’re trying to learn together,” Riverdale coach Brandon Burks said.

The Warriors started four sophomores and a junior and had nine players score in the first half, building a 38-18 lead at intermission. They led by at least 20 for the entire second half.

Josh Woodard led Smyrna with 12 points.

“I felt like they worked hard, but we’ve just got to learn how to win and learn how to compete better,” Smyrna coach Lonny Drayton said.
